“They have a wonderful old-time string band sound which I simply love. ” Frank Hennessy, Celtic Heartbeat - BBC Radio Wales
“This is near-impeccable Americana, made in Britain. Four guys from Bristol (UK) make up Appalachia; united by a deep knowledge and flair for various forms of American music, they cover a broader base than their name would suggest. There's blues, folk, jazz and ragtime in the mix here, but they play in the style of a bluegrass band: one guy on upright bass and the other three on guitars/mandolin/ banjo - the precise instrumentation varying from one song to another. Arranging themselves around a single microphone, they take their turns in the spotlight and share the lead vocal duties around whilst the rest of the band lean in to harmonise. I have rarely heard any band make this music sound so warm and rich, such is the quality of their playing, their singing, and their arrangements.” Flyin'Shoes Review
“Good music, tight harmonies, nice suits and the mandolin got hotter and hotter! Foot stompin get up and dance music. Look out for all these talented musicians - into all kinds of music and they seem to get everywhere! ”
Kingshill Art centre, Dursley
"Appalachia really brought the House alive and the audience loved them. We were hoping for a quality, feel-good night of music and that's exactly what we got. A very friendly band too, it was a pleasure to work with them."

AppalachiaAppalachia - “Fusion String Band” Appalachia is a perfect blend of strings, voices and musical styles. In concert they offer up their own inspired take on American roots music, mixing blues, country, jazz, ragtime, bluegrass and unique originals into a potent brew that will move you…and make you move! “To make you good folks smile “ Band members James Slater, Richard Burley, Danny Ward and Douglas Hamilton, from Wisconsin USA, met on the Southwest England acoustic circuit and discovered to their delight that they created something really special when they played together. They are all compelling singer songwriters and seasoned instrumentalists in their own right. As Appalachia, they deliver finely crafted four-part harmonies and a repertoire which draws on guitar, slide, dobro, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and double bass. James’s original arrangements and anchored rhythm guitar provide a strong backbone for Danny’s accomplished ragtime/blues picking on guitar and banjo and Richard’s unique style of jazz and blues influenced guitar and mandolin, while Doug anchors it all down on double bass.
