This is our genre and the kind of music that goes down well in a tiny pub like ours. No full-on gothic rock or Covers tribute bands.
Brighton is extremely competitive these days .... posters everywhere, every night there are shows on all over town. As you know it is very hard to make any sort of living form running pubs so the days of putting on new unknown acts for seven people and a small tortoise for us are fading. A very great shame really, but over the years nobody can say that The Greys has not done its bit.
In fact The Greys has become so well known for putting on great 'named' acts that our customers are now a little spoilt and tend to look out for the stars of today on the circuit anyway.
So we are only looking to book acts that are well known and have a well proven track record. Sorry to disappoint those of you who are in need of venues to hone your trade, as it were.
It also means more door splits rather than big guarantees as well.
Tickets selling policy change: now you can buy tickets over the counter at the pub or with credit card or cash over the phone at Rounder Records 01273 325440. ....... no more sweating on the door and hoping that you've remembered !
"backstreet shoebox venue - capacity 70 - decent PA - lights - stage - some good Mics. - ADAT recording and a good sounding room with a listening audience - most of whom either play, write, perform or have more than a passing interest in music and performance."
It's not the Palladium - we just treat it as if it is!
It has to be well done - and it has to be a show - not wallpaper. In 2000 an American act flew in for some Radio work and did only 3 shows in the UK and asked his agent to get them in The Greys because they liked it!
A good act can give me a throbbing bar or turn it into a church where I don't sell any beer and you can hear a pin drop - either way is OK
Maximum of 70 tickets only - our audience like the space - especially when they've paid for a ticket.
A smallish guarantee against a net box office door split is the norm.
The more well know the act - the 'easier' it is to sell tickets
Seeing top acts in a small venue like The Greys is a thrill and worth a few quid. You can have a beer and chat with the act after the show - although it is advisable to buy their CD
We are winning. Our advantage over other promoters are that we have the bar sales. The venue, PA, Light, staff etc. don't cost any extra.
The thrill is putting on class shows - tucked away in the back streets.
